4 km long and 1.5 km wide at its widest point, protected from the south and east winds by Belle Ile, Houat is a moorland-covered plateau interspersed with a few shallow valleys, ending in a village overlooking a lively little port.
Today, the Houat community has a population of 224, compared with the half a thousand inhabitants who populated the island during the first part of the 20th century.
